Vietnam's VNeID digital passport not valid for overseas travel

The VNeID application now displays passport information, allowing Vietnamese citizens to manage personal documents digitally. However, authorities clarify that the digital record cannot replace the physical passport when leaving or entering the country. Travelers must present the original passport with a valid expiration date at international airports and border checkpoints; scanned images, photos, or data shown on VNeID are not accepted.

The rule also applies to automated immigration gates (Autogate). For domestic flights, a Level‑2 electronic ID on VNeID is accepted and functions like a national ID card, but this exception does not extend to international travel. Misunderstanding the policy can lead to denied boarding or delays at the airport.
