Viettel enters Dominican Republic telecom market with 240 MHz spectrum

Vietnamese state-owned telecommunications firm Viettel is entering the Dominican Republic market after being awarded 240 MHz of radio spectrum by the Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (Indotel). The 20-year spectrum allocation includes bands at 700 MHz, 2.3 GHz, and 3.6 GHz, which will allow the company to build a new telecommunications network across the country.

Viettel, a part of the Military Industry and Telecoms Group, marks its 11th international market and its third in the Americas. The company aims to introduce advanced technologies and expand coverage to remote areas. This entry introduces new competition to a market currently dominated by Claro and Altice, which hold over 97% of mobile lines. While specific commercial plans and launch dates have not been disclosed, Indotel views the expansion as an opportunity to increase competition and consumer options.
