Basilicata celebrates the feast of the Madonna Nera di Viggiano
The region of Basilicata is celebrating the feast of the Madonna Nera di Viggiano, the patron saint of Lucania. The event features the traditional return of the Madonna from the Sacro Monte to Viggiano, drawing thousands of pilgrims from across the region and Southern Italy.
Regional President Vito Bardi described the pilgrimage as a moment of collective identity and social cohesion that connects the community to its historical roots. Regional Councilor Carmine Cicala emphasized that the celebration is not only about religious tradition but also about the responsibility to support rural communities and combat depopulation by preserving local identity.
In addition to the central liturgical celebrations in Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII, the festivities include the “Centa” pilgrimage from Caggiano, a 60-kilometer trek through ancient paths that concludes with a meeting of devotees at the Sacro Monte.
