Carabinieri arrest impostors posing as officers in fraud schemes
In July 2026 the Carabinieri seized three separate fraud operations in which suspects pretended to be members of the force to extort money and valuables from vulnerable adults. In Lavello, a 21‑year‑old from Campania was caught after phone calls impersonating Carabinieri threatened elderly victims with false robbery accusations, demanding cash and jewelry. In Roccamonfina, a 45‑year‑old was arrested for posing as a marshal, convincing an 80‑year‑old pensioner to hand over gold and a luxury watch worth about €70,000. In Arezzo, a 21‑year‑old from Bari was detained while attempting to obtain jewelry from a couple aged 72 and 77 by claiming to be a Carabinieri marshal. All three arrests underscore the police’s warning to seniors to verify identities and report suspicious requests to emergency services.
