Vigo and Almería push forward major underground transport expansions

In Vigo, the Beiramar tunnel – opened in 1996 as Spain’s longest urban tunnel at the time – is set for a new extension to Calle Coruña and a surface pedestrianisation that will add a landscaped corridor linking the port to the city. The original 1.2‑km tunnel, built with an investment of about €35 million and now carrying more than 40,000 vehicles daily, was a joint effort by the municipal council, the Port Authority and the Free Zone.

In Almería, the completion of the underground railway works has allowed the reopening of the Carrera de los Minerales, the Camino de la Goleta and Avenida del Mediterráneo to traffic. A large roundabout replaces the former bridge, reconnecting the city’s north‑south axis and reshaping the urban landscape. The project is framed as a broader regeneration scheme that will later accommodate high‑speed rail, although dates for that extension remain uncertain.
