Vigo and Pontevedra face significant workforce decline by 2040

A demographic analysis by The Adecco Group and the Adecco Foundation predicts a significant decline in the working-age population in Galicia, Spain, between 2030 and 2040. According to INE projections, the region is expected to lose 125,280 people of working age, while the population over 64 is projected to increase by 127,958.

The province of Pontevedra, specifically Vigo, is expected to experience the most intense reduction in the working-age population among Galicia's four provinces. In this area, the number of people aged 16 to 64 is forecasted to drop from 596,402 to 542,238, representing a loss of 54,165 potential workers, or approximately 9.1%.

Concurrently, the population over 64 in the province is expected to grow by 51,785 people, a 20.3% increase. By 2040, nearly one in three residents in the region will be over the age of 64. Francisco Mesonero, Director General of the Adecco Foundation, emphasized that addressing this demographic challenge requires prioritizing labor inclusion for women at risk of exclusion, people with disabilities, and other groups facing employment barriers to combat the growing professional shortage.
