Vigo and University of Vigo to remodel rugby field

The Vigo City Council and the University of Vigo (UVigo) have signed a collaboration agreement to completely remodel the historic rugby field located at the As Lagoas-Marcosende campus. The project involves a total investment of approximately 624,000 euros, with the City Council contributing 500,000 euros and the university providing more than 124,000 euros.

The renovation will replace the current natural grass, which is in poor condition due to intense use, with high-quality artificial turf. This upgrade is intended to allow the facility to host official regional and national competitions and to accommodate both rugby and football. The new field will feature a 60mm artificial grass layer on an elastic base and include a new irrigation system.

The works are expected to take 91 days to complete. Currently, local teams like the Vigo Rugby Club often have to use municipal football facilities due to the lack of a certified rugby-specific space.
