Vigo approves new tourist tax to begin in October

The Vigo local government has approved a new tourist tax ordinance, set to take effect on October 1. The regulation will apply to individuals staying overnight in the city, with rates determined by the category of the accommodation.

Fees will range from 0.80 euros for hostels, campsites, and rural tourism establishments to 2 euros for five-star and four-star superior hotels. A moratorium for longer stays will remain in place until July 1, 2027, after which a maximum of five nights per stay will be subject to the charge. Certain groups are exempt from the tax, including minors, individuals with a disability of 65% or higher, social program users, and those staying in public hostels. Additionally, travel for medical reasons, federated sports competitions, or social emergencies will not be taxed.

The People's Party (PP) has criticized the decision by Abel Caballero's administration, noting that all objections and suggestions from hotel businesses and the Port were rejected. Critics have also called for greater transparency regarding the intended use of the projected two million euros in revenue.
