Vigo approves new tourist tax to take effect in October

The Vigo City Council has officially approved a new tourist tax ordinance, which is set to be implemented progressively starting October 1. The measure passed with the support of the local socialist government, while the PP and BNG parties voted against it.

The tax will vary based on the type of accommodation, with rates ranging from 0.80 to 2 euros per person per day. For instance, five-star hotels will face a rate of 2 euros (including VAT), while other hotels, pensions, and tourist rentals will pay between 1.20 and 1.60 euros. A specific rate of 1.20 euros will apply to stays on cruise ships, though this component will not take effect until July 1, 2027, to allow shipping companies time to plan.

Local officials noted that Vigo's rates are among the lowest on the Atlantic coast. Opponents of the measure criticized the ordinance, claiming it was developed without sufficient consensus from the tourism sector and accusing the government of importing 'touristophobia' rhetoric.
