Vigo council approves €70 million bus overhaul and electric fleet upgrade

The Vigo municipal council has approved a new public‑transport contract valued at €70 million, which will be awarded to Vitrasa. The agreement requires the acquisition of 55 new buses, with at least 41 fully electric and 14 plug‑in hybrid vehicles, and a progressive renewal of the existing fleet. The plan includes high‑capacity batteries, advanced driver‑assist systems and automatic emergency braking for the 12‑metre electric buses, as well as the installation of five defibrillators on the circular line.

To support the electric fleet, the Camposancos garage will be upgraded with charging points, intelligent energy‑management systems, LED lighting, renewable‑energy integration and full accessibility compliance. Drivers will gain 11 new chemical‑toilet facilities, and passenger payment will shift to contactless cards, QR codes, NFC and digital wallets, with a fully virtual Pass Vigo integrated into a new mobile app.
