Vigo modifies Balaídos stadium project to increase capacity

The Vigo City Council is modifying the construction project for the new Gol stand at Balaídos stadium to increase its capacity from 6,418 to 7,139 seats. Mayor Abel Caballero announced that the budget will increase by approximately 600,000 euros, bringing the total cost to 25.42 million euros.

The modifications include a new concrete structure design, updated foundations, electrical installations, and lighting. To accommodate the higher capacity, a new emergency staircase will be constructed to improve evacuation routes, and elevators will be adjusted to include up to six stops.

The project also accounts for future stadium transformations. The council decided not to build the previously planned covered corridor in front of the Tribuna stand to avoid redundant investments, as that area is slated for expansion ahead of the 2030 World Cup.

While full completion is expected by early 2027, officials aim to partially open the lower section of the Gol stand in time for the Celta vs. Deportivo derby on January 3, which could bring the stadium capacity to approximately 26,000 spectators.
