Vigo expands English immersion scholarships to over 1,000 students

The Vigo City Council approved an increase in the municipal "Vigo en Inglés" scholarship programme, adding 88 new places for a total of 1,015 awards. The expansion adds €285,000 to the budget, bringing the programme’s total cost to €3.285 million, with each scholarship funded at €3,235 by the city.

Mayor Abel Caballero highlighted that the programme, launched in 2008, enables 14‑ to 15‑year‑old students to spend three weeks living with host families in England or Ireland, learning English and experiencing British and Irish culture. More than 12,000 Vigo students have benefited since its inception, and the council expects that roughly half of each school cohort will now receive a scholarship.
