Vigo fisheries expand through acquisitions and asset sales
Fisheries based in Vigo, Spain, are undergoing significant structural changes and expansion. Nueva Pescanova has completed the sale of its chilled division in France to the Ecuadorian company Omarsa. This move is part of a broader asset review process initiated earlier this year. Despite previous unsuccessful negotiations regarding a sale to Canada's Cooke, Nueva Pescanova reported a profit of 1.1 million euros in 2025 on a turnover of 1,053 million euros.
Simultaneously, competitors are increasing their market share through acquisitions. Profand, Spain's largest fishery by turnover, recently acquired 100% of the Canary Islands-based Unión Martín, a specialist in cephalopods with operations in Morocco and Mauritania. Additionally, Wofco is strengthening its presence in Portugal. These movements reflect a period of consolidation and strategic repositioning within the regional seafood sector.
