Vigo government and opposition clash over firefighter staffing
Political tension has risen in Vigo regarding the management of the municipal fire department. Luisa Sánchez, president of the People's Party (PP) in Vigo, has criticized the local government for relying on extraordinary shifts to compensate for severe staff shortages. She argued that the administration is using these shifts as a way to bypass the legal minimum requirement of 20 firefighters per shift, a policy she claims was changed a year ago to resolve the staffing issue.
In response, the Vigo local government defended the use of extraordinary shifts, describing them as a voluntary reinforcement measure intended to ensure operational capacity and rapid response times. The administration stated that these measures comply with labor risk reports and are not intended to replace long-term personnel planning.
The government further asserted that new professionals are being integrated into the force and expects Vigo to reach its largest firefighting staff in history this autumn. They also rejected the figures provided by the PP, claiming the opposition's data is incorrect and accusing them of using slander to undermine the city's management.
