Vigo honors mayors executed during 1936 repression

The Mayor of Vigo, Abel Caballero, led a public tribute to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the executions of former mayors Emilio Martínez Garrido and José Antela Conde. Both men were democratically elected representatives who were executed in 1936 during the repression of political figures and unionists.

During the ceremony, Caballero honored the memory of several other victims of the 1936 repression, including Antonio Bilbatúa Zubeldía, Demetrio Bilbatúa Zubeldía, Enrique Heraclio Botana, Avelino Torres López, Ubaldo Gil Santostegui, Ramón González Brunet, and Ignacio Seoane. He emphasized that their crime was being democrats and seeking social transformation.

The tribute also extended recognition to the families of those repressed, who faced years of marginalization, and to all victims of the 1936 killings, many of whom remain missing. Caballero linked the recovery of historical memory to the current political climate, calling for a defense of democratic values against the rise of far-right movements in Spain and Europe.
