Vigo implements new Low Emission Zones amid political criticism

Vigo has officially implemented its Low Emission Zones (Zonas de Bajas Emisiones), with city workers deploying new vertical and horizontal signage to mark restricted perimeters. The city has established four restricted areas: a central zone covering approximately 400,000 square meters, followed by areas in Praza de Portugal, Bouzas, and Calvario.

The implementation will be progressive. For the next two years, access is restricted for vehicles without an environmental badge. A second phase will expand restrictions to vehicles with a 'B' label, and a final phase is planned for 2031 to include 'C' label vehicles. The city council stated there will be a one-year adaptation period where drivers will receive warnings instead of fines.

However, the opposition party, PP, has criticized the rollout. Local councillor Miguel Martín accused Mayor Abel Caballero of implementing the measure “by surprise” and “without warning anyone.” The PP has denounced a lack of transparency regarding potential fines, noting that while the city claims no immediate sanctions will be imposed, fines of 200 euros are expected after the adaptation period. Additionally, the opposition noted that the digital application for processing access permits is not yet operational despite the zones being active.
