Vigo Mayor calls for new reservoir to combat drought
Vigo Mayor Abel Caballero is renewing calls to the Xunta de Galicia for the construction of a new reservoir upstream of the Eiras reservoir on the Oitavén river. Caballero argues that while Vigo has water, it lacks sufficient stored capacity to withstand prolonged droughts, a situation he claims threatens local industry and economic stability.
Caballero asserts that the project is already outlined in a study co-funded by the Spanish Government, the Xunta de Galicia, and the Vigo City Council. He criticized the regional administration for projecting a resolution to water supply needs as late as 2070.
However, the proposal has met political resistance. Andrés Díaz, the Mayor of Ponte Caldelas, criticized Caballero for proposing infrastructure that would impact neighboring municipalities without prior consultation. Díaz emphasized the need for rigorous technical studies to address current issues, such as water loss through valves and silt accumulation in the existing Eiras reservoir, before committing to new construction.
