Vigo Mayor demands official updates on 2030 World Cup candidacy
Vigo Mayor Abel Caballero has demanded official information from the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) regarding the city's candidacy to host matches for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Caballero expressed frustration that, as of September, the city council has received no formal communication confirming whether the proposal has been submitted to FIFA or when international technicians might visit the Balaídos stadium to evaluate progress.
The Mayor noted that the RFEF previously identified Vigo and Valencia as alternative host cities during its General Assembly in June. Despite these indications, the local government remains in the dark regarding the official timeline and the status of the candidacy transfer to FIFA.
Regarding stadium preparations, Caballero defended the progress of works at Balaídos, stating that the city is meeting its deadlines. He projected that by December, three stands will be ready for the tournament, with the new 'Gol' stand expected to increase the stadium's capacity to over 30,000 spectators.
