Vigo Mayor demands resignation over wastewater reuse dispute
Vigo Mayor Abel Caballero has called for the resignation of Galicia's Environment Minister, Ángeles Vázquez, following reports that the Xunta de Galicia is considering using treated wastewater for irrigation and street cleaning.
Caballero expressed incredulity regarding the regional government's sudden interest in wastewater reuse, noting that the Vigo City Council has been requesting permission to use treated water from its local purification plant for street cleaning since 2021. The Mayor stated that despite repeated requests and the current severe drought conditions, the Xunta has failed to provide a response.
The local government argues that the regional administration's delay is negligent, especially as reservoir levels reach historic lows. In addition to the demand for wastewater reuse, Vigo is also calling for the construction of a new reservoir upstream of the current one to address water scarcity issues.
