Vigo mayor extends Plan Barrios to improve energy efficiency in housing
Mayor Abel Caballero of Vigo visited three buildings on Bueu street in the Coia neighbourhood to announce the continuation of the municipal Plan Barrios programme. The scheme, funded with €6.5 million of European Union subsidies provided by the Spanish government, has already upgraded the energy efficiency of more than 400 homes across twelve city districts.
The recent works on the three 1970s‑era blocks involved renovations to roofs, façades, elevators, stairs and portals for 34 apartments, with subsidies covering 86 % of costs for one building, 68 % for another and 56 % for the third. Six additional buildings in Coia are currently under renovation, affecting another 150 households.
Plan Barrios aims to raise the overall habitability of existing residential stock by improving insulation and other energy‑saving measures, with the city pledging to keep using the aid to “substantially improve the lives of many people.”
