Vigo mayor keeps water pre‑alert as Galicia faces severe drought

Mayor Abel Caballero of Vigo confirmed on Thursday that the city remains under a pre‑alert for water scarcity, even though the regional government said there is no immediate risk to supply. He warned that the Eiras reservoir is at its second‑worst level in history, with an eight‑point drop in stored water, and urged residents to avoid non‑essential uses such as filling pools or leaving taps running while brushing teeth. Caballero said, “We do not create fear, we are simply cautious,” and called for the construction of a second upstream reservoir on the Oitavén River, accusing the Galician government of opposing Vigo’s water security.

Meanwhile, the council of Redondela in Pontevedra announced emergency water‑saving measures across municipal facilities and public beaches after Aqualia reported the declining volume at the Eiras reservoir. The mayor, Digna Rivas, said the steps were taken “by strict precaution and anticipatory responsibility.” Showers and wash‑basins on beaches were closed, street washing was halted, ornamental fountains were shut off, and irrigation was reduced to essential levels. Residents were urged to limit car washing, pool filling and garden watering at home.
