Vigo municipal government faces criticism over subsidy irregularities

Luisa Sánchez, head of the People's Party in Vigo, accused Mayor Abel Caballero's administration of severe financial mismanagement ahead of a council meeting. She highlighted the municipal auditor's report showing major flaws in the handling of direct subsidies, where 96 grants worth €5.3 million were awarded, more than half violating the active publicity and transparency law because they were not entered in the national subsidies database and lacked mandatory monitoring committees.

The report also identified other deficiencies: invoices taking longer than the legal three‑month approval window, a €6 million discrepancy between the 2024 accounting balance and the audit figure, excessive use of minor contracts, and cost overruns on more than half of municipal works, often nearing the legal limit. Sánchez framed the findings as evidence of “total improvisation” and a lack of planning, control, and effective execution by the local government.
