Vigo nightclub faces scrutiny over gender-based promotion
The Barrocco Vigo nightclub in central Vigo has sparked controversy by promoting an event titled ‘Noche épica’ that offers free entry and a glass of cava to the first 20 women who arrive. While the general admission price is set at 3 euros, the promotion specifically targets women, a practice that has drawn criticism for being sexist.
The promotion, organized by the company Esencia Havana, features Latin music genres such as bachata, salsa, and reggaeton. Critics and feminist collectives have noted that such practices, which use women as a draw to attract male customers, are considered illegal under Spain’s Equality Law and Article 14 of the Constitution due to gender discrimination. Similar promotions have previously resulted in fines for nightclubs in other parts of Spain.
