Vigo Police Target Mobile “Hurtos Cariñosos” Theft Ring

In July, the Spanish National Police in Galicia opened an investigation into an itinerant criminal group operating in Vigo that carried out a series of “hurtos cariñosos” – so‑called “affectionate thefts”. The thieves approach vulnerable, often elderly, victims on the street, engage them in conversation, and then skillfully remove gold jewelry, watches and wallets without the victims noticing until they return home. At least four incidents were reported within two days. The police noted a similar pattern in other Galician cities, including Pontevedra, and referenced a recent operation in Zamora that resulted in five arrests and the seizure of jewelry worth more than €40,000.

Authorities warned that the same groups also use the “tocomocho” scam, where victims are tricked into believing they have won a lottery ticket or possess authentic banknotes that are actually counterfeit, prompting them to hand over cash or valuables. Police advice emphasizes prevention: families should alert older relatives, avoid giving money to strangers on the street, and verify any urgent financial proposals through official channels.
