Vigo proposes 107.5 million euro investment for 2030 World Cup

The Vigo City Council has proposed a 107.5 million euro investment plan to upgrade the Balaídos stadium and prepare the city for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The proposed funding model suggests a three-way split between the City Council, the Xunta de Galicia, and the Provincial Council, with each institution initially responsible for approximately 35.8 million euros.

To reduce the financial burden on these regional administrations, the draft agreement seeks to secure co-financing from the Spanish central government through the Interministerial Commission responsible for organizing the tournament. Other potential revenue streams include sponsorships and tax incentives. However, the central government is not currently a signatory, and no specific amount has been committed.

The proposal has faced political criticism from the BNG party. Spokesperson Xabier P. Igrexas has called for an independent audit of the project's economic and social impact, noting that more than 60 million euros have already been spent on stadium reforms. The BNG has questioned the priority of such large-scale spending given local needs regarding housing and employment, while also pointing out the lack of specific budget allocations for 2025 and 2026.
