Vigo receives both blue and black environmental flags for its coast
Mayor Abel Caballero celebrated Vigo’s record number of blue‑flag beaches, saying “Somos a cidade de España con máis bandeiras azuis”. The city now boasts 12 beaches and 14 blue‑flag trails, underscoring municipal investment in coastal and natural‑area maintenance.
At the same time, the environmental group Ecoloxistas en Acción published its annual report assigning black flags to Vigo and neighbouring Baiona. The report cites pollution, urban pressure, the controversial expansion of Baiona’s port, a mining‑waste spill at Monte Neme, and inadequate local management as reasons for the criticism, marking Vigo for “urban aggression” at Cabo Estai.
