Vigo's Portuguese Coastal Route hits record 90,000 pilgrims

The Portuguese Coastal Route passing through Vigo has reached a new milestone, surpassing 90,000 pilgrims this year. This figure breaks the previous record set in 2025, with projections suggesting the total may exceed 100,000 by the end of the year, representing a 25 percent increase over the previous year.

Data indicates that 81 percent of these pilgrims are foreign nationals. The largest groups include travelers from the United States (over 10,000), Italy (9,281), and Germany (8,101). This influx is providing a significant economic boost to Vigo’s local commerce and hospitality sectors, with some days seeing nearly 1,000 pilgrims accommodated in the city.

Despite the growth, concerns remain regarding infrastructure and signage. While the route offers a unique coastal experience along the Atlantic, there are ongoing calls for better wayfinding and official markers within the city to assist travelers as the route continues to expand in popularity.
