Vigo's proposed municipal housing firm criticized as an empty shell
The Galician nationalist party BNG in Vigo denounced Mayor Abel Caballero's plan to create the Empresa Municipal de Vivienda (EMVIGO) as lacking ambition and at risk of becoming "an empty shell" that cannot address the city's housing emergency. BNG spokesperson Xabier P. Igrexas warned that "the situation in the city cannot be solved with threats to appear to do something," highlighting a rental market crisis where eight tourist apartments exist for every residential rental unit and half of the available rentals cost over €1,000 per month.
The party argued that a genuine public instrument is needed, not a market‑driven entity, and criticised the proposal to allocate two‑thirds of public land to private development and to reserve only 10% of future housing for emergency needs, with rents capped at €700. BNG called for fully public, permanently protected housing to guarantee the right to a home.
