Viiankiaapa mire mining project faces regulatory delays

The proposed mining project at the Viiankiaapa mire in Sodankylä, Finland, has encountered delays as the Ministry of the Environment requests additional information from the Regional Council of Lapland. The international mining company Anglo American seeks to extract copper and nickel from the area, which is protected under both national law and the EU’s Natura 2000 program.

The request for supplementary documentation stems from deficiencies identified by the Finnish Forest Administration, the granting and supervisory authority, and the European Commission. Specifically, the current application is deemed insufficient in demonstrating how potential environmental damage would be compensated, a requirement for obtaining a Natura derogation. Furthermore, the ministry requires more justification regarding whether the project meets the criteria of being an imperative reason of overriding public interest.

Environmental advocates, including representatives from WWF, have expressed skepticism regarding the project's ability to meet these legal thresholds. Critics argue that granting permission for mining in such a unique ecological site could set a precedent for future mining applications in other protected Natura 2000 areas across Finland.
