Vijay Mallya alleges discrepancies in Indian debt recovery figures
Vijay Mallya, an alleged fugitive businessman, has raised questions regarding the consistency of India’s debt resolution process. In recent social media posts, Mallya claimed that while banks and the government admit to recovering Rs 14,100 crore from him, his original judgment debt was Rs 6,203 crore.
Mallya highlighted discrepancies in figures presented to the public and Parliament. He noted that the Finance Minister reported a recovery of Rs 14,100 crore, whereas banks have cited a figure of Rs 10,000 crore. Furthermore, he pointed out conflicting statements regarding his remaining debt, with the Minister of State for Finance stating he owes Rs 10,000 crore, while banks claim the outstanding amount is Rs 7,000 crore.
Comparing his situation to media baron Subhash Chandra, who reportedly sought to settle creditor claims of over Rs 22,000 crore with a much smaller payment, Mallya criticized the perceived inequality in how different borrowers settle debts. He has called for an independent investigation by a retired judge to verify the actual figures and provide clarity on the calculations.
