Vijayawada butcher arrested for murder and dismemberment

Police in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, have arrested a mutton shop operator, identified as Mohd Shafi, for the brutal murder and dismemberment of a woman named Kalyani. The crime was discovered on September 18 when a torso was found in a canal near the Ibrahimpatnam area.

Investigators used drones and assistance from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to recover the victim's head, legs, and other body parts from the canal. The victim was identified by her brother after he recognized a specific tattoo on her hand through information shared on social media.

Authorities state the murder occurred on September 17 following a dispute over money and the custody of a child. Shafi had previously adopted Kalyani’s son. Police allege that after a fight at Shafi's residence, he killed the woman and severed her body into pieces to conceal her identity and facilitate disposal. An associate, identified as Guruvulu, is also believed to have assisted in the disposal of the remains.
