Vijayawada: Police clash with employees protesting for pay raises

Protests by Gram and Ward Secretariat employees in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, led to violent clashes with police on Sunday. The employees gathered at Dharna Chowk as part of the ‘Chalo Vijayawada’ demonstration to demand promotions and salary increases.

Police attempted to detain protesters, leading to a confrontation that resulted in a lathi charge. The clash left several protesters and police officers injured. During the unrest, Circle Inspector Ahmed Ali suffered a heart attack while on duty and passed away while being transported to a hospital.

Opposition members from the YSR Congress Party condemned the actions of the TDP-led coalition government, accusing them of using police force to suppress legitimate demands and failing to honor election promises. At least 141 individuals were reportedly taken into custody.
