Viking 1 Mars Landing 50th Anniversary Celebrated with New Images

NASA’s Viking 1 lander became the first spacecraft to successfully touch down on Mars on 20 July 1976. The mission, originally designed for a 90‑day operation, endured for more than six years, sending back over 4,500 photographs. To mark the 50th anniversary, a space podcast episode and a NASA feature released a selection of the original images, including the first color photo, early sunsets, panoramic shots of sand dunes and rock outcrops, and the iconic United States flag placed on the lander's windscreen. The anniversary coverage also revisited the Viking biology experiments and the subsequent scientific debate over their results, now understood to be affected by perchlorates in Martian soil. The original landing site was delayed by a couple of weeks after scouting revealed a rockier terrain than anticipated, but Viking 1 ultimately provided a wealth of data that laid the groundwork for later Mars exploration.
