Viking Cruises expands river, ocean, and expedition fleets
Viking, founded by Torstein Hagen in 1997, has expanded from its origins in European river cruising to include ocean-going vessels and expedition voyages. The company currently operates approximately 90 river boats and has grown its ocean fleet to 12 ships.
In 2022, the company launched expedition voyages using polar ships designed for 398 passengers, allowing for travel across all seven continents, including the Arctic and Antarctic. Viking positions itself as a brand for ‘the thinking traveller,’ featuring a travel style that excludes casinos and children.
Recent itineraries include Mediterranean voyages, such as an eight-day trip through Greece and Türkiye. These routes cover destinations including Athens, Crete, Rhodes, Ephesus, Troy, and Istanbul, focusing on historical sites like the Acropolis Museum and various ancient ruins.
