Viking launches hydrogen-powered cruise ship Viking Astrea

Viking has launched the Viking Astrea, its second hydrogen-powered cruise ship, at the Fincantieri shipyard in Ancona. The vessel is designed to operate with zero emissions using a propulsion system based on liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells.

Measuring approximately 54,300 gross tons and 239 metres in length, the ship will feature 499 cabins capable of accommodating up to 998 passengers. The propulsion system, enabled by Isotta Fraschini Motori (IFM), can produce up to six megawatts of power. Following the float-out ceremony, the ship will move to an outfitting dock for final construction and interior build-out.

Viking Astrea is scheduled for delivery in May 2027, with its inaugural season planned for the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. This vessel follows the Viking Libra, which is expected to be delivered in November 2026.
