Vikram Solar subsidiary to build 7.5 GWh battery storage plant in India
VSL PowerHive, a subsidiary of Vikram Solar, has announced plans to establish a 7.5 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS) assembly facility in Oragadam, near Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The 165,000-square-foot plant is scheduled for inauguration in January 2027, with commercial operations expected to commence in April 2027.
The facility will focus on assembling lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery storage systems for utility-scale, commercial, and industrial applications. The product lineup will include liquid-cooled battery storage containers, P261 battery cabinets, and renewable energy-integrated storage solutions.
As part of a long-term roadmap, the company intends to expand the facility’s annual capacity to 15 GWh in subsequent phases, aiming for a total manufacturing capacity of 30 GWh by 2030. PowerHive also plans to expand into cell manufacturing starting in 2028 to create a fully integrated battery ecosystem in India. Vikram Solar Chairman and Managing Director Gyanesh Chaudhary stated that the facility is a step toward building domestic capability to support India’s renewable energy transition and grid stability.
