Viktor Belenko MiG-25 defection marks 50 years since Soviet pilot fled to Japan

Fifty years ago, on September 6, 1976, Soviet Lieutenant Viktor Ivanovich Belenko defected to the West by flying a MiG-25P Foxbat interceptor to Japan. During a training flight from Chuguyevka Air Base, Belenko flew at low altitudes to evade radar and crossed the Sea of Japan. Unable to locate Chitose Air Base, he landed at Hakodate Airport on Hokkaido, where the aircraft overran the runway.

The defection provided Western intelligence with a significant opportunity to examine the highly guarded aircraft. Specialists discovered the MiG-25 was constructed largely from nickel steel rather than titanium and utilized vacuum tube electronics. The aircraft was eventually returned to the Soviet Union in 30 crates.

Following the incident, Belenko requested political asylum in the United States, where he eventually became a citizen. Recent coverage from Russian state media, such as Rossijskaja gazeta, has characterized Belenko as a traitor, describing his death in a U.S. nursing home in 2023 as a “deserved end” for a defector.
