Viktor Frankl and the principles of logotherapy
Austrian psychiatrist and neurologist Viktor Frankl, a survivor of four Nazi concentration camps, developed logotherapy, a psychotherapeutic approach centered on the human drive to find meaning. Frankl argued that true quality of life is determined not by external circumstances like wealth, health, or fame, but by an individual's internal response to reality and the meaning they assign to it.
His work addresses the concept of the ‘existential vacuum’—a state of emptiness where individuals fulfill daily obligations but lack a sense of purpose, which can lead to despair, anxiety, or depression. Frankl posited that happiness cannot be pursued directly; rather, it is a byproduct of living a life filled with meaning, such as through work, family, or helping others. He famously noted that while everything can be taken from a person, the ultimate freedom remains the ability to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances.
