Viktor Orbán denied statutory secretariat by current government
Bertalan Havasi, the Fidesz press chief, stated that the current government has failed to fulfill its legal obligation to provide former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán with a two-person secretariat. According to Havasi, Orbán sent two official letters to the responsible minister requesting these resources, but received no response.
As a result, the secretariat is currently operating out of the Fidesz headquarters on Lendvay Street rather than through official government channels. Under Hungarian law (Act CXXV of 2018), a former prime minister is entitled to a two-person secretariat for half the duration of their term in office. In Orbán's case, this entitlement lasts for eight years.
The law also mandates the provision of a personal vehicle and driver, provided by the police, for a period equal to the length of the individual's term as prime minister. This means Orbán is entitled to state-funded personal vehicle use for 16 years.
