Viktor Orbán proposed as joint UN Secretary-General candidate FAST-MOVING

The Trump administration is reportedly promoting former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán for the position of United Nations Secretary-General. According to reports from The Wall Street Journal citing sources from three countries, Washington has encouraged Orbán to enter the race to succeed António Guterres, whose term ends on December 31, 2026.

The proposed plan involves Orbán serving as a joint candidate supported by the United States, Russia, and China. U.S. officials suggest that while the idea may seem surprising, previous discussions indicate that Moscow and Beijing might be amenable to the proposal. An official from the U.S. State Department noted that Orbán could potentially secure between eight and ten votes in the UN Security Council.

However, significant hurdles remain. A successful candidate requires at least nine votes from the Security Council and must avoid a veto from any of the five permanent members. While the U.S., Russia, and China may support the candidacy, France and the United Kingdom retain the power to block it through a veto. Orbán has reportedly expressed interest in the role but has not officially declared his candidacy.
