Viktor Orbán considered for UN Secretary-General role

Reports from The Wall Street Journal and other outlets suggest the United States administration has encouraged former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to consider a candidacy for UN Secretary-General. The proposal reportedly involves seeking potential support from Russia and China to secure a consensus among permanent Security Council members.

António Guterres is set to complete his mandate on December 31, 2026. While some sources suggest Orbán might be open to the role provided he has sufficient backing, no official candidacy or formal trilateral agreement has been confirmed. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Aleksandr Alimov stated that neither Russia, the US, nor China would personally nominate Orbán, noting that permanent members typically do not nominate their own candidates.

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has strongly criticized the idea, stating that the UN is not a criminal organization and should not be led by a “mafia boss.” He suggested that appointing Orbán would be a way to undermine or destroy the organization. Additionally, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot expressed opposition to the possibility, noting that the position should not serve as a consolation prize for a politician following an election defeat.
