Vila Belmiro stadium marks 110 years amid modernization works
The Urbano Caldeira Stadium, widely known as Vila Belmiro, marks 110 years since its inauguration. Originally scheduled for October 12, 1916, the opening match between Santos and Ypiranga was delayed due to heavy rain, though various club matches held on that date led to it being recognized as the official anniversary.
Santos Futebol Clube is currently utilizing a two-week break in its match schedule to advance a modernization project for the stadium. The renovation focuses on the former Visa sector, with plans to lower seating closer to the pitch and expand access via Rua Dom Pedro. The project aims to create a more intense atmosphere for home matches by bringing fans closer to the field.
Future developments for the renovated area include commercial spaces such as food courts, bars, and restrooms to serve both stadium visitors and pedestrians. This phase of the main stand renovation is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
