Vila de Punhe inaugurates monument to First World War veterans
A monument honoring former combatants of the First World War was inaugurated this Sunday in Vila de Punhe, located in the Viana do Castelo district. The ceremony served as a tribute to those who served the country, aiming to preserve their memory and legacy.
Luís Nobre, President of the Viana do Castelo Municipality, attended the event and described the monument as an opportunity to remember citizens from the parish, region, and country who fulfilled their missions. He noted that the consequences of war are still felt over a century later and suggested the monument serves as a continuous challenge to reflect on global values and current threats of conflict.
Bruno Guimarães, President of the Vila de Punhe Parish Council, characterized the inauguration as a moment of respect and gratitude for those who served the nation. Orlando Novo, representing the Liga dos Combatentes and the Viana do Castelo branch, emphasized that the tribute is not to glorify war, but to honor those on the front lines who left their homes and families to fight for their country, from Minho to Timor.
