Rio Grande do Sul police dismantle 3D-printed firearm ring
The Civil Police of Rio Grande do Sul launched 'Operação 3D' to dismantle a criminal network specializing in the illegal manufacture and sale of firearms produced via 3D printing. The operation, coordinated by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, targeted several municipalities in the Porto Alegre metropolitan area, including Canoas, Porto Alegre, Triunfo, Eldorado do Sul, São Leopoldo, and Montenegro.
Authorities executed 20 preventive arrest warrants and 14 search and seizure warrants. Investigators identified a structured organization where members held specific roles: one individual was responsible for the technical production of the weapons, others managed orders, and others handled distribution. The main suspect was apprehended in Canoas.
The group utilized 3D printers to create firearm components, such as rigid plastic external structures and magazines, which were then combined with metal parts like barrels and springs. Police described the resulting 'ghost guns' as high-caliber, high-precision weapons that were sold to individuals associated with various criminal factions, including rival groups within the state.
