Vila Real de Santo António highlights history and education investment

Vila Real de Santo António is undergoing significant urban and educational developments. Historically, the city was established in 1773 by order of the Marquês de Pombal following the destruction of the fishing village of Santo António de Arenilha. Designed with a geometric urban plan similar to the Pombaline reconstruction of Lisbon, the city features a central Praça Real and a rectangular grid of blocks.

In contemporary news, the municipality has announced a 6 million euro investment package for the 2026/2027 school year. This includes 5.1 million euros funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) for the requalification of Escola Básica D. José I. The package also provides free meals for approximately 3,300 students from pre-school through the 12th grade, costing about 500,000 euros annually. Additional support includes free workbooks for primary students, school supplies, transport, and nutritional programs.
