Vila Real de Santo António man arrested for attempted homicide

A 72-year-old man has been detained by the Polícia Judiciária in Vila Real de Santo António on suspicion of attempted homicide and possession of a prohibited weapon. The incident occurred on July 10 in a rural area of the Algarve region.

Investigators believe the shooting was the result of a neighborhood conflict involving a land dispute. The victim, a 71-year-old man, was driving a vehicle on an access road to the suspect's property when he was struck by a shotgun blast fired from a short distance. The suspect reportedly fired at the wrong person, as the victim was driving a vehicle identical to that of an individual with whom the suspect was in conflict.

No injuries were reported because the vehicle's windshield resisted the impact of the shot. Authorities have seized a shotgun believed to be the weapon used in the incident. The suspect will face judicial interrogation to determine coercive measures, with the investigation being led by the local Department of Investigation and Criminal Action (DIAP).
