Community and volunteer initiatives active across Portugal

Various community and volunteer initiatives are active across Portugal. The association Just a Change is conducting its Camp In 2026 program, mobilizing volunteers to rehabilitate over 100 homes for families facing housing poverty in regions including Santiago do Cacém, Odemira, Sines, and Arraiolos.

In Vila Real, participants of the European project ‘Camino is a Team Work’ are working on the Portuguese Way of Santiago to promote heritage and sustainability through environmental maintenance and cultural preservation. Similarly, in Viana do Alentejo, the ‘Geração +’ project is engaging youth in nature preservation and cleaning activities.

Local cultural events also include the Caminhada dos Capuchos in Vila Viçosa, a night walk designed to promote physical activity and heritage appreciation. Meanwhile, the municipality of Castelo Branco has issued an appeal for citizens to protect public irrigation systems to prevent water waste during the summer heat.
