Lisbon shooting suspects surrender after wounding Swedish tourist
Three suspects have surrendered to authorities following a shooting in Lisbon's Baixa district on August 10. The incident, which occurred on Rua Augusta, involved a confrontation between two groups allegedly involved in the illegal sale of dried bay leaves. During the altercation, a 42-year-old Swedish tourist was struck in the chest by a stray bullet.
The suspects, aged between 21 and 32, surrendered to the Polícia Judiciária after police conducted searches at their residences. During judicial interrogation, two of the men pleaded innocence while a third remained silent. They have been placed under house arrest with electronic monitoring.
Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas expressed alarm regarding public security in the city, calling for increased police presence. While the Ministry of Internal Administration previously promised to reinforce patrolling in tourist areas, Moedas noted that the expected deployment of additional municipal and national police officers has not yet materialized.
