Vila Viçosa seeks national heritage status for Sede Ducal

The municipality of Vila Viçosa is seeking to have the “Vila Viçosa, Sede Ducal” complex recognized as a site of national interest in Portugal. This move is part of a strategic effort by the local government to bolster its candidacy for UNESCO World Heritage status.

According to Announcement No. 248/2026, published in the Diário da República on September 16, the municipality has updated the classification procedure that began in 2018. The update includes a redefined Provisional Special Protection Zone and a name change from “Vila Viçosa, Renaissance Ducal Town” to “Vila Viçosa, Sede Ducal.”

Mayor Inácio Esperança stated that the goal is to recognize the town as a whole rather than classifying individual monuments. While national classification is not a formal requirement for the UNESCO evaluation process, the Mayor believes that official recognition by the Portuguese state could signal the country's commitment to the site's preservation to international evaluators.
