Municipal legislatures in Brazil elect new boards of directors
Various municipal legislatures in Brazil have recently held elections for their new Boards of Directors for the 2027/2028 biennium.
In Cuiabá, Ilde Taques was elected president of the Municipal Chamber with unanimous support from 27 councilors. Cuiabá Mayor Abilio Brunini congratulated the new board, emphasizing the importance of institutional dialogue between the Executive and Legislative branches. The outgoing president, Paula Calil, noted that her term was historic for establishing the country’s first all-female board, and she expressed her intention to continue her mandate as a councilor.
In Carambeí, Professor Deleon (Deleon Betim) won the presidency with 7 votes against 4. In Vilhena, despite a judicial injunction intended to suspend the election process due to insufficient notice for candidates, the Chamber proceeded with the session and elected Pedrinho as president.
In Ilhéus, councilor Vinícius Alcântara used the election of César Porto as president to advocate for greater legislative independence, arguing that the Chamber must have the tools to function without being perpetually dependent on the Executive branch for basic resources.
